'paraphrase'라는 영어 표현 - '다른 말로 바꾸어 표현하다/표현한 것'

 

 

조금 더 자세하게는,   단순히 다른 말로 바꾸어 표현하는 것만이 아니라, 

 

'더 간결하게 하기 위해, 또는 이해를 더 쉽게 하기 위해' 라는 조건이 깔린 표현이다.  

 

영문 정의

동사로 쓰일 경우:

to express what someone else said or wrote using different words, especially in order to make it shorter or clearer.

 

명사로 쓰일 경우:

a statement that uses different words to express something that someone said or wrote,

especially in order to make it shorter or clearer.

 

 

참고로 직관적으로 보이겠지만,

para(여러 뜻이 있는 접두사(prefix)인데, 그 중 'alongside(=나란히, 옆에)'의 의미로 쓰여진 경우인데,

       어떤 개념인지 이해는 바로 되는데 명료하게 설명을 하라면 뭔가 어려워서 찝찝한 부분이긴 하다. 

      말그대로 'A'라는 것과 'B'라는(이 경우에는 A, B 모두 어떤 '표현'이라는 전제) 것이 서로

'나란히'(=같은 선상에 = 같은 의미로) 있는 느낌이라고 보는 게 최선의 묘사일 것 같다.

phrase(동사로 쓰일 경우 '말하다, 표현하다', 명사로 쓰일 경우 '말, 구')가 합쳐진 단어다.

- I shall paraphrase a little to save some time

- She paraphrased the sentence to help her children to understand more easily

- A translation must be a paraphrase to be readable

 실제로 paraphrase가 된 예시들을 보이는 것이 더 도움이 될 것 같다.

In ancient times, the ollive branch was used as a peace symbol, as well as doves.

 

paraphrase를 거친 문장:

Many centuries ago, olive branches and doves were signs of peace.

She angered me with her inappropirate remarks, rumor-spreading, and disrespectfulness at the dinner table.
