'미리' 영어로 - in advance / beforehand / ahead of time

영어사전에 '미리'를 찾으면 보통 이 3개가 세트로 나올 것이다. 

대체적으로 공통점이 많은 표현이지만 약간의 차이도 물론 있다.  

한 번 알아보자.

 

 

in advance -  '미리'를 영어로 옮길 때 가장 안전한(포괄적인) 표현

아래에 다룰 beforehand/ahead of time이라는 표현은 그 사용에 약간의 제약이 있는 반면, 

이 'in advance'라는 표현은 '미리'라는 표현을 영어로 옮길 때 웬만해선 어색하거나 실패할 일이 거의 없는 표현이다.

 

 

e.g)

- It’s cheaper if you book the tickets in advance.

- Plan your route in advance, using main roads as far as possible.

- I'll be looking to hearing from you, and thanks in advance.

 

 

beforehand - in advance와 사실상 동의어, but (상대적으로) 덜 쓰임

 

 위에도 썼지만, in advance가 '미리'라는 뜻을 나타낼 때 가장 보편적이고 포괄적인, 안전한 영어 표현인 반면에

 

beforehand는 그 뜻 자체는 in advance와 거의 완전히 동의어라고 봐도 무리는 없지만

 beforehand가 in advance보다 조금 더 낡은 느낌의 표현이다(그렇다고 한다).

 

원어민 의견 참조-

"The word ‘beforehand’ is an older word that means the same as ‘in advance’.

I don’t hear it quite as often with younger people, but we of the older generations use ‘beforehand’ quite a bit. We also use ‘in advance’."

 

"In US it is seldom used. There is seldom any need for it. Phrases like in advance, prior to, ahead of time, earlier are common. Beforehand is not."

 

이런 이유로 대개의 경우 '미리'라고 하면 in advance가 훨씬 자주 쓰이는 느낌이다.

(표현을 보면 바로 느낌이 오겠지만  'in advance'가 더 formal한 단어이고, beforehand는 상대적으로 informal한 단어이다.

그런데도 불구하고 일반적인 상식과는 달리 beforehand과 덜 쓰이는 것은 꽤 특이한 경우 중 하나라고 볼 수 있겠다.)

- I wish we’d known about it beforehand.

- I knew his intention beforehand.

- A two-week notification must be given beforehand.

 

 

ahead of time - '미리'라는 뜻이긴 한데, ''정해진 시간'보다 미리'라는 뜻

 

말 그대로다. 

여기서 'ahead of'는 '~에 앞서'라는 뜻이다. 

그래서 'ahead of time'은 일반적인 '미리'에 의미가 조금 더 추가되어, '원래 무언가가 완료될 시간보다 미리'라는 

뜻이 된다.

 

ahead of time 앞에 별다른 수식어가 없이 써도 상관은 없지만, 

구체적으로 '몇 분/몇 시간 미리'라는 뜻을 전달하고자 할 때에는

10 minutes ahead of time/2 days ahead of time과 같이, 바로 앞에 (얼마나 미리인지) 시간을 추가해서 쓸 수도 있다.

 

e.g)

- We finished 15 minutes ahead of time. (15분 미리 끝냄) 

- He often arrives for work ahead of time. (정확히 얼마나 미리인진 모르지만, 아무튼 정시보다 일찍 출근)

- You should've called ahead of time. (얼마나인진 모르지만, 아무튼 더 빨리 통화했어야 함)
