'토끼' 영어로 - rabbit과 hare의 구별

'토끼'가 영어로 뭐냐고 물으면 열에 아홉은, 아니 100 중 99는 'rabbit'이라고 한다.

그게 당연하다고 생각하긴 하는데, 희한하게도 우리가 아는 이솝우화의 '토끼와 거북이'는 영어로 'Hare and Tortoise'이다.

즉, 'rabbit'이 아닌 'hare'라는 단어를 쓴다. 

('거북이' 또한 'turtle'이 아닌 'tortoise'라고 하는데, 이건 다음에 다룰 예정) 

 

뭐가 어떻게 다른 건지 알아본다.

 

 

rabbit - 우리말로의 '집토끼'에 해당

일반적으로 우리가 '토끼'라고 하면 가장 먼저 떠올리는,

동글동글 복실복실 똘망똘망 순둥순둥하게 생긴 토끼가 바로 영어로 'rabbit'이다. 

 

수십 종의 토끼가 존재하는데 그중 굴을 파고 사는 '굴토끼'류가 있고, 거기에 '집토끼', 즉 'rabbit'이 속하는 것이라고 한다.

(이게 정확한 분류는 아니지만, 대략적인 개념은 그렇다고 한다.)

 

 

 

*참고로 'bunny'라는 말도 꽤나 자주 쓰이는데(예: 벅스 버니),

차이가 있다면 rabbit의 새끼, 즉 어린 집토끼를 bunny라고 부르는 것이 일반적이라는 점이겠다

하지만 꼭 '새끼' 집토끼가 아니더라도 주로 '어린아이들'이 rabbit 대신 bunny라는 단어를 더 자주 쓰는 경향이 있다.

hare - 우리말의 '산토끼'에 해당 

위의 집토끼(굴토끼 종류)와 비교를 한다면, 산토끼는 우선 굴을 파고 살지 않는다는 점이 큰 차이점이겠다.

또한 위 사진을 봐도 바로 알 수 있듯, 확실히 rabbit보다는 귀여운 느낌이 덜 한 것이 일반적이다.

Hare가 rabbit보다 보통 귀가 더 크고, 얼굴도 더 길쭉하며 다리도 더 길쭉한 편이다. 

 

 

이 정도의 대략적인 차이 외에 rabbit과 hare의 조금 더 세밀한 차이는 아래의 한 원어민의 설명을 참조하면 도움이 되겠다.

 

 

-Rabbits are generally about half the size and much rounder than Hares.

There is some few exceptions but as a rule of thumb it works well.

 

-Rabbits live in groups/families with a lot of other families around them.

Hares are generally solitary except when mating.

-Rabbits burrow, digging elaborate tunnels and nests where they can hide and nurse their babies.

Hares live in high

grass, bushes and shrubbery, they don’t dig holes.

-Rabbits have 42 chromosomes,

Hares have 48.

-Rabbits are pregnant for about 30–32 days and the babies are born naked, blind and deaf in a nest lined with fur hidden in their burrow.

Hare babies are born after 42–44 days, fully developed and ready to take on the world.

-Rabbits fight by grabbing (with their mouth) and kicking with their strong hind legs.

Hares fight by “boxing” with their front legs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

아무튼 잘은 몰라도, 우리가 아는 '토끼와 거북이'가 영어로 'hare and tortoise'인 이상, 그 우화 속의 토끼는 아마도 위와 같이 생겼을 것이라는 것을 추측할 수 있겠다.
