'과일과 야채' 영어로 - fruit(s) and vegetable(s)

 

 

이것 또한 내가 살면서 헷갈리고 궁금하고 답답해 미칠 것 같던 여러 케이스 중 한 가지이다. 

 

제목만 봐서는 도대체 여기서 어떤 점이 궁금하다는건지 이해가 안 갈 수 있겠다. 

 

뭐가 이해가 안 갔냐면, 바로 똑같이 '과일'과 '야채'를 표현하는데,  내가 보고 들어온 영어에 의하면

 

희한하게 fruit은 그냥 fruit으로 쓰고 vegetable은 거의 항상 vegetables로 쓴다는 점이었다.

 

 

이게 도저히 이해가 가지 않았던 이유는 크게 아래와 같다. 

 

 

1) fruit이 가산명사이면, 당연히 vegetable도 가산명사일 것이고,  그 반대의 경우도 마찬가지일 것이다.

  (그렇지 않을 이유가 없기 때문에 -  물론 뒤에 가면 그렇지 않다는 결론이 나오지만.) 

 

*일단 나는 기억도 안 날 정도로 어릴 때 fruit은 불가산명사라는 걸 배웠다는 걸 기억은 하고 있었다.

 

 

2)  참고로 우리가 흔히 '불가산 명사'라고 하는 것들도, 무조건 복수형으로 절대 쓸 수 없는 개념은 아니긴 하다.

  예를 들어 'fruits' 자체도 사용이 가능하다. 

그런데 이 경우 '과일 여러 개'의 의미가 아닌, '여러 종류의 과일' 로 쓰이는 경우다.

  (e.g - John's three favorite fruits are apples, bananas, and papayas. -세 종류의 과일(사과, 바나나, 파파야))

 

 

3) 그런데 정말 희한하게도, 위에 썼듯이, '과일과 야채'라는 세트 문구로 쓰일 경우, 열에 아홉, 아니 백에 구십구는

  'fruit and vegetables'라고 쓰인다는 거다.   

 

fruit이나 vegetable이나 의미만 다르지 명사로서의 성질 자체는 차이가 없다는 걸 감안하면 

 'fruit and vegetable'이라고 하던가, 'fruits and vegetables'라고,  적어도 일관성은 있게 표현을 해야 납득이 가는데

 

도대체 왜 저런지 이해가 안 가서 슬플 지경이었다. 

 

더 슬픈 건, 옛날에 대학교때 여러 영어 전공 수업에서 교수님들, 심지어 원어민 교수님들한테도 왜 저렇게 되는지 

질문을 했었는데  결국 속시원한 대답은 못 들었다는 점이다. 

 

물론 옛날에야 슬프고 절망적이었지만,  지금에 와서는 그렇지는 않다.

 

이게 왜 그런건지 이유를 알아서가 아니라, 

영어에서 내가 궁금한 거, 논리적이지 않다고 생각하는 거는 결국 아무리 검색을 하고 연구를 해보고 질문을 해봐야

그 이유를 정확히 알 수가 없는 게 과반수라는 걸 이제는 여러 경험으로 깨달았기 때문이다.

(블로그 글 아직 몇 개 안 썼지만, 'it's the way it is'라는 표현을 두어번은 쓴 것 같은데, 

대부분 내가 죽어도 이해가 안 가던 것들은 결국 그렇게 결론이 난다.  이젠 익숙하다.)

 

 

말이 길어졌는데, 결국 이에 대한 이유는 아래와 같다.

 

'fruit'는 기본적으로 불가산명사다.

 

그렇지만, fruit으로도 쓰이고(불가산 명사이기 때문에 가능한 것),

  fruits로도 쓰인다(위에 이미 한 번 설명했듯, 'different kinds of'의 의미로 쓰이는 경우. 

 

하지만 'vegetable'는 기본적으로 가산명사다. (내가 오랫동안 잘못 알고 있었던 부분이 바로 여기다). 

 

 그렇기 때문에 '과일과 야채'라고 그 집단의 총칭을 일컬을 때의 '채소'는 vegetables라고 해야 맞는거다.

 

도대체 무슨 이유에서인지,  위의 과일들은 불가산 명사이고,

 

위의 야채들은 가산명사인 것이다. 

 

 

 

정말 대단하다. 

 

 

 

아래는 영어 관련 해외의 토론 사이트에서 찾은 여러 답변들이다.   

  다 읽어보면 알 수 있겠지만,  역시 이들도 정확한 이유는 모른다고 보면 될 것 같다.

 

1)

"'Fruit' is of course considered as an uncountable noun, but only when referring to fruit as a category of foods"

 

 We can certainly say 'fruits'. But this usually refers to different types of fruits (e.g - 'apples, bananas and pears are fruits eaten throughout the world', but "fruit is widely consumed throughout the world")

 

Strangely enough, the same cannot be said of vegetables, which is a countable noun in either context."

 

 

2)

"Vegetables and fruit are spoken of in different ways.

I eat a lot of fruit.

-I am not saying that I eat a huge amount of apples, or any other single kind of fruit.

This means that I eat a lot of 'all kinds' of different fruit. 

  And it is a very natural sentence.

I eat a lot of fruits.

- This stresses the range of different kinds of fruit I eat. 

 It sounds odd to me.  

 In real life, if I were to express this meaning, I would say 'I eat a lot of different fruit.'

I eat a lot of vegetable.
It sounds really strange and I think I would never say in this way.

I eat a lot of vegetables.
That sounds natural.

So, "I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables."
-Perfect.

But is it Logical?
Of course not."

 

 

3)

✔ I don't like fruit.
？ I don't like fruits.

The first sentence uses the 'mass-noun' sense of fruit. 

And the second uses the 'count-noun' sense of fruits. 

 Although 'fruits' is not as common(as 'fruit'), it is still accepted.

But vegetable has no 'mass-noun' sense—it's a word that's always used as a count noun:

✔ I don't like vegetables.
✘ I don't like vegetable.

Because we do not use vegetable as a mass-noun,  its singular use here is wrong.

But please note, that I cannot say why we use some words as mass nouns, while that's not the case for others. 

  I would say it's just simply our use of the language has evolved that way.

 

 

 

4)

Q: Why is it that the word 'vegetable' is a countale noun, when the word 'fruit' is a non-countable noun?

A: The only explanation I can give you, is that language is not always logical.

 

 

 

 

즉 결론은,

일반적으로 우리말로 '과일과 야채'라고 하는 걸 영어로 옮길 경우, 가장 흔하고 자연스럽게 쓰이는 것은

(표현에 일관성이 없다는 점은 차치하고)  'fruit and vegetables'다.

 

그리고 'fruits and vegetables'도 가능하며, 덜 쓰일지언정 부자연스럽게 느껴지는 표현은 아니라는 것 같다.

 

하지만 'fruits and vegetable' , 'fruit and vegetable' 모두 이상하게 들리고 안 쓰인다는 것 같다.

 (vegetable에 's'가 안 붙어있기 때문에.)

 

 

 

웬만하면 이해할 생각은 하지 말고, 그냥 외우는 게 효율적인 경우다.
