'유산' 영어로 - inheritance? heritage? legacy?

 

 

 

보통 죽은 사람이 남겨 놓은 재산, 또는 이전 세대로부터 물려받는 문화나 물건 등을 통틀어

'유산(遺産)'이라고 한다. 

여기서 遺 는'남길 유'자로,  유산과 더불어 유언, 유품, 유실물, 유적 등등에 쓰이는 단어다. 

 

아무튼 영어로 넘어가서,

 

단어를 배울 때 보면 '유산'에 해당하는 단어로 inheritance, heritage, legacy 보통 이 3가지 단어를 가장 많이 접하곤 한다.

'bequest'라는 단어도 있긴 하지만, 정말 formal 한 단어이고, 영어 시험에나 나올 단어라고 보면 되는 단어고

일상생활에서는 잘 쓰이지 않는 단어라서 넘어간다. 

 

그러면 이 세 단어 -inheritance, heritage, legacy-의 차이는 어떻게 될까? 

 

사전적 정의로 살펴보면,

 

inheritance:

• 1.명사 money, property, etc., that is received from someone when that person dies
• 2. 명사something from the past that is still important or valuable

heritage:

•  the traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a group or nation

legacy:

• 1. 명사something (such as property or money) that is received from someone who has died
• 2. 명사something that happened in the past or that comes from someone in the past

그냥 딱 봐도 차이를 구별하기가 참 애매하다.

 

가장 큰 공통점은 '한 세대에서 그다음 세대(그 세대의 개념이 작은 개념이든 큰 개념이든)로 물려준다는 개념'이다.

 (그게 '유산'의 기본 정의이니 당연하긴 하지만)

 

개별적으로 나누어서 보면, inheritance와 legacy의 경우는 둘 다 'money, property'가 있다.

 즉 물려받는 것 중 '돈, 재산'의 경우에 쓰인다는 것이다.

 

inheritance 2번 정의: something from the past that is still important or valuable

legacy 2번 정의: something that happened in the past or that comes from someone in the past

 

이 둘의 경우, 사실 그 차이를 크게 두어야 할지 잘 모르겠다. 

내 개인적인 생각으로는 이렇게 일반적인 범위의 뜻으로는 차이가 없다고 봐도 무방할 것 같다.

 

그러면 결국 inheritance = legacy라고 봐도 될 것 같은데, 

사실 이게 원어민들의 사용을 보면 그렇게 단정할 수가 없는 단어들이다. 

 

 

이 둘의 첫 번째 유의미한 차이는 아래와 같다.

 

Legacy, as it relates to inheritance, will be of broader or deeper scope.

 

I feel nuances do matter yet legacy deals more with traits those are intangible..with genetic mode of transfer ..

and more importantly related to traits in personality. . whereas inhertance has more to do with material and earned properties.. having more to do with lawful .. a tangible actionable claim..

 

Often the words are interchangeable, but idiom controls when each is best used.

'Legacy' is used more often in a figurative sense than is 'inheritance',

but both can be used to refer to what is inherited in a physical sense (money, property, etc.).

 

즉, 비록 inheritance와 legacy 둘 다 일단 그냥 일반적인 '물려받는 무언가'의 개념으로 쓰이는 건 대전제고,

  또한 두 단어 모두 '물질적인' 측면의 유산으로 쓰일 수 있긴 하지만, 

inheritance는 '(법적인 의미의) 상속(즉, 물질적인 것들)'의 의미로 주로 쓰인다면

legacy는 inheritance의 개념을 포함하여, 기질, 특징, 성향, 유전 등등의 전달 개념으로도 쓰인다고 봐야 한다. 

 '문화, 전통'의 유산 개념으로도 쓰이기도 하는 단어다.

 

두 번째 유의미한 차이(그리고 단어의 사용 자체만 놓고 보면 이게 더 중요한 차이라고 생각한다)는 아래와 같다.

"inheritance" is generally from the viewpoint of the receiver,

while "legacy" is from the viewpoint of the giver: My inheritance was my father's legacy.

-이 점이 정말 중요하다고 생각한다.

실제로 주로 사용되는 용법을 보면, inheritance와 legacy의 뉘앙스 차이는 둘째 치고,

똑같은 '유산'이라는 뜻으로 쓰이지만

inheritance: (내가 받은) 유산

legacy: (다른 누군가 남기고 떠난) 유산

 

즉, '관점'의 차이가 분명히 존재한다. 

같은(비슷한) 개념을 '받는 사람'의 관점에서 쓰느냐, '주는 사람'의 관점에서 쓰느냐, 이게 여기서는 중요한 차이다. 

위 예문의 'My inheritance was my father's legacy.' 부분이 이를 단적으로 보여주는 문장이다.

 

그러면 heritage는?

이건 의외로 간단하다.

위의 사전 정의 ' the traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a group or nation'

이거에서 실질적으로 크게 벗어나질 않는다. 

 

범위 자체가 부모-자식 이런 정도의 규모가 아니라,  'part of the history of a group or nation'에서 알 수 있듯,

보다 더 긴 세대를 걸친 뉘앙스가 강하고,

그 유산의 속성도 단순히 돈 얼마, 물건 몇 개, 그런 정도가 아니라 'the traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc.'에서

볼 수 있듯 스케일 자체가 커다란 느낌이다. 

 

마지막으로, inheritance-legacy의 비교에서와 마찬가지로,  여기서도 heritage는 '받는 자(여기서는 '집단'이 더 어울리겠다.)'의 관점에 초점이 맞춰져 있다.

 

inheritance, heritage 모두 '받는 사람(집단)'에 초점이 맞춰져 있고,

legacy는 '물려주는 사람(집단)'에 초점이 맞춰져 있다.

 

 

무엇보다 이런 차이는 이렇게 개념 위주로 보는 것보다 실제 어떻게 쓰이는지 그 예문을 보는 것이 훨씬 도움이 된다.

그래서 평소와 같이 예문으로 끝마친다. 위의 설명된 부분을 상기하면서 예문을 비교 분석해보면 도움이 될 것 같다.
