'구분하다/구별하다' 영어로 - 'distinguish'

 

무언가를 구분/구별한다는 뜻을 가진 표현으로는

distinguish, differentiate, discern, tell apart, tell the difference 등등.. 

꽤 많은 표현이 있지만 

 

내 경험 상 많은 사람들이 헷갈리는 것으로 distinguish가 있었다. 

 

그리고 충분히 헷갈리는 게 이해가 되는 표현이기도 하고,

이게 파고들면 용법이 약간 애매해지는 부분도 있기도 해서, 여기에서는 distinguish 한 개만 다뤄본다. 

 

 

distinguish의 가장 기본적인 사전적 의미를 보면, 

영한 - '구별하다'

영영 - 'to notice or recognize a difference between people or things'라고 나와있다.  

 

결국 영한이나 영영이나 둘 다 결국 구분/구별하다라는 것인데, 

 

이걸 그대로 알고 쓰기에는 항상 부족하다고 느꼈다.  그 이유는 아래와 같다.

 

우리는 'a와 b를 구별/구분하다'라고 말을 한다.

 

그러면 distinguish라는 표현을 알고 있는 한,  

자연스럽게 'distinguish A and B'라고 하게 되는 것이 일반적이다. 

 

그런데 '통상적인' 영어 문법으로는 그렇지가 않다는 것이다.

 

통상적인 용법으로는 

distinguish 'between' A and B라고 하든가

distinguish A from B(또는 B from A)라고 쓰는 것이 맞다.

 

여기서 중요한 것은 첫 번째에서 'between'이 들어간다는 사실이다. 

 

즉, 굳이 문법적인 용어를 쓰자면, 

distingish between A and B를 봤을 때는 distinguish가 자동사(=intrasntive verb)이고, 

 distinguish A from B를 봤을 때는  distinguish가 타동사(=transitive verb)라는 것이다. 

 

쓰임에 따라 자동사도 되고, 타동사도 될 수 있는 그런 동사 중 한 개라고 봐야 한다.

 

각각의 쓰임을 보면 아래와 같다. 

 

distinguish between A and B 

e.g)

- At what age are children able to distinguish between right and wrong?

- He could no longer distinguish between illusion and reality.

- Children sometimes cannot distinguish between dreams and reality.

 

 

distinguish A from B (또는 B from A)

e.g)

- It is not easy to distinguish satire from comedies. 

- It needs an expert's eye to distinguish it from the real thing.

- To be self-aware means to be able to distinguish oneself from others.

 

 

 

그런데, 여기서 약간의 논란의 여지가 있어보이는 것은 

 

'distinguish between A and B'가 통상적인 문법이라고 쓰긴 했지만 (즉, 자동사로서의 distinguish) 

 

일부 원어민의 주장에 따르면, 

내가 처음에 한국인들이 많이들 헷갈려서 쓸 표현이라고 했던 

'distinguish A and B' 표현이 'distinguish between A and B'와 '동일하다'고 한다.  이건 굉장히 신기했다. 

 

한 번 아래의 영문 코멘트를 보자.

(따로 해석은 제공 안 함.   파란색 하이라이트 부분이 핵심)

 

"Here are the two key meanings as given by the Oxford English Dictionary:

I. Transitive senses.4 a To recognize as distinct or different; to separate mentally (things, or one thing from another); to perceive or note the difference between (things); to draw a distinction between.

II intransitive senses
b. with between = 4

First, tmeaning given under the transitive sense I 4 a is 'to draw a distinction between'.

This shows that the transitive sense already includes the meaning of 'between'.

It does not require the word 'between' to be added to 'distinguish', because it is already expressed.

Secondly, under the intransitive sense II b, the OED notes 'b. with between = 4'. What does this note mean?

It is saying that the

intransitive sense+'between'(=distinguish between) is equal to the transitive sense without' between'(=distinguish).

In other words, the phrase 'distinguish between red and green' means the same as 'distinguish red and green'."

 

 

 

그래서 결론적으로 이 용법을 어떻게 정리해야 할지 사실 나도 확실치가 않다.  

 

distinguish between A and B와 distinguish A from B(B from A), 이 2개 형태가 맞는 용법이라고 말을 해야 할지,

 

아니면 그것과 더불어 'distinguish A and B'도 맞는 표현이라고 추가를 해야 할지를 모르겠다. 

 

개인적으로는 원어민이 사전 설명과 함께 설명을 제시를 한 것을 보면  그 말이 맞다고 봐야 한다고 생각을 하긴 한다. 

  하지만 학교/학원에서 가르치고 배우는 것은 또 그거랑은 다를 때가 굉장히 많은 것도 사실이다.    

 

영어 시험을 준비하는 사람이라면 우선은 그냥 위의 2개 용법만 맞다고 생각을 하고, 

 세 번째 용법에 대해서는 따로 선생님께 물어보는 것이 안전해 보인다. 

 

하지만 따로 준비하는 시험이 있거나 한 것이 아닌, 영어 그 자체를 공부하는 사람이라면 셋 다 허용되는 표현이라고

이해를 하는 게 좋지 않을까 싶다.

(어차피 한국인인 이상 distinguish A and B라고 나오는 게 더 자연스럽기 때문에,

오히려 이것도 맞는 표현이라서 다행이라고 생각을 할 수도 있겠다.) 

 

 

*결론: 

시험용: distinguish between A and B와 distinguish A from B(B from A)는 확실히 맞고, 

          'distinguish A and B'는 맞다고 봐도 괜찮은지 담당 선생님에게 문의 요망

 

실제 영어: distinguish between A and B와 distinguish A from B(B from A)는 당연히 맞고

              'distinguish' A and B' 또한, 'distinguish between A and B'와 동의어로 쓰인다고 이해해도 좋을 듯.
