'멸종하다' 영어로 - 'become/go extinct'와 'die out' (cf. '멸종위기' 영어로)

'멸종하다' - 영어로 어떻게 표현할까? 

 

 

은근히 많은 사람들이 'extinct'라고 답을 하지 않을까 싶다. 

 

그런데 extinct는 '형용사'다.  '멸종된, 더 이상 존재하지 않는' 이라는 뜻이다.  

명사형인 '멸종'은 영어로 'extinction'이다.

 

'멸종하다'는 영어로 'become/go extinct'라고 해야지 맞는 표현이다. 

 

예문을 살펴보자.

 

extinct - 형용사 - '멸종된, 더 이상 존재하지 않는'

- Servants are now almost extinct in modern society.

- Buffalos are almost extinct because of carelessness.

 

extinction -  명사 - '멸종' 

- Panda bears have been close to extinction in the past. 

- The universe repeats the cycle of creation and extinction.

 

become/get extinct - 동사 '멸종하다'

- Dinosaurs became extinct a long time ago.

- Then the endangered species would definitely go extinct.

- They need protection so that they do not go extinct.

 

 

다음으로, 역시나 많은 동사들이 그러하듯 이 표현 또한 조금 더 쉬운 단어로 표현할 수 있는 구동사(phrasal verb)가 있다.  

 

바로 die out이라는 표현이다.'죽다' 뜻을 가진 'die'에 'out'을 더하면 '멸종하다'라는 표현이 되는데,  영어 정의로는 아래와 같다.'to become extinct, especially after a period of gradual decline'

 

뒤의 표현 때문에 '서서히 멸종하다'라는 의미가 더 추가된 느낌이 있을지는 모르겠는데,

그냥 become extinct랑 사실상 동의어라고 생각해도 무방하다.   차이를 구별하는 경우는 거의 못 봤다.

 

e.g)

- All dinosaurs died out long ago.

- This species has nearly died out because its habitat is being destroyed.

- The virus died out years ago.

 

 

항상 그렇듯, 'become extinct'와 'die out'을 비교하면, 역시나 'die out' 쪽이 조금 더 informal한 성격이

강한 표현이다.  일상 생활속에서야 become extinct/die out 다 써도 상관 없지만,  논문이나 조금이나마 격식이

있는 글/대화에서는 'become extinct'를 쓰는 쪽이 낫지 않을까 싶다. 

 

 

**번외로, '멸종 위기의' - 어떻게 표현할까?

영어 공부를 어느정도 했다면 꽤 많이 봤겠지만,  'endangered'라고 표현한다.

 

원형인 'endanger'가 'en' + 'danger'이 합쳐진 것인데,  danger은 모두가 알듯 '위험'이고, 

여기서 'en' 부분은 'make/cause'의 뜻을 가진 말이다. 

즉 'endanger' - '위험에 처하게 하다' 라는 뜻이다.

 

 

이 'endangered'라는 표현의 영어 정의를 보자면, 크게 2가지다.

1. threatened with a danger

-이 경우는, 위의 'endanger' 표현을 그대로 써서 분사 형태로 만든 표현으로,   

 말그대로 '위험에 처한'이라는 뜻이다. 사람, 짐승, 국가, 등등,, 무엇이든 'endangered'인 상태가 될 수 있다.

 

2.Biology, Ecology. generally perceived as threatened with extinction /

  having a very high risk of extinction, second only to the status of critically endangered,

 - 이것이 위의 '멸종 위기의' 뜻에 부합하는데,  대상이 모든 것이 될 수 있는 1번보다는 더 좁은 의미로 쓰이는 말이다. 

biology/ecology에서 볼 수 있듯,  흔히 우리가 말하는 자연 생태계에서의 동/식물에 관해 쓰는 그 개념이다.

- 14% of primate species are highly endangered.

- The list of endangered species includes nearly 600 fishes.
